Dr. Karpecki graduated from Indiana University and completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Hunkeler Eye Centers in affiliation with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1994. He currently works at the Koffler Vision Group in Cornea services and Ocular Disease Research.

He has lectured in over 400 symposia covering four continents and was invited to both the Delphi International Society at Wilmer-John's Hopkins that includes the top 25 dry eye experts in the world, and the National Eye Institute's dry eye committee. This was a task force established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to better understand and treat dry eye disease in women.

Dr. Karpecki is the current Chair of the Refractive Surgery Advisory Board to the AOA, Co-Chair of the ASCRS Task Force on the Integrated Eyecare Delivery System and serves on the AOA Congress Education Committee. A noted educator and author, Dr. Karpecki presently serves on numerous professional journal editorial boards.

DEREK NELSON CUNNINGHAM, O.D., FAAO

Dr. Cunningham is the Director of Optometry at Dell Laser Consultants in Austin, Texas. His research involves retinal drug treatments, glaucoma surgery techniques, ocular surface disease, and refractive surgery. Previously Dr. Cunningham was the resident education supervisor at the Division of Ophthalmology, Texas Tech School of Medicine at El Paso and clinic director for a surgery co-management center in Alabama.

He has a special interest in sports vision, and he routinely lectures and presents at the National Athletic Trainers Association meeting and the American College of Sports Medicine meetings. He is also a council member for the American Optometric Association Sports Vision Section.

Jerome Sherman, O.D. is optometry's most prolific author, publishing over 725 clinical articles, research manuscripts, book chapters and two CDs. He is also the senior author of four books that were published over the past 4 years, and has delivered over three thousand lectures both nationally and internationally. Over the past 2 years, he has conceptualized, written and organized Jobson's Retina Revealed web site. As of Feb, 2011 RR has hundreds of cases with over 1500 retinal images and 100 movies exhibiting all the latest retinal technologies. Having graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, he presently holds the position of Distinguished Teaching Professor at State University of New York College of Optometry and the Schnurmacher Institute of Vision Research. Concurrently, he maintains a private practice, The Eye Institute and Laser Center, in New York City. Dr. Sherman is a founding member of both the International Foundation for Optic Nerve Disease (IFOND) and the Optometric Retina Society (ORS) and is now the President of ORS.

Ocular Disease Symposium

This year's Symposium is a 20-hour COPE approved lecture series filled with clinical pearls from some of optometry's most recognized educators. The first day is packed with cornea and anterior segment disease management courses presented by Dr. Paul Karpecki followed by one of optometry's top new lecturers, Derek Cunningham who's had extensive clinical experience in managing ocular trauma, glaucoma and a plethora of ocular diseases. Finally the program rounds out with one of the top recognized experts in retina, Dr. Jerry Sherman who will provide insights in the the management of posterior segment eye diseases.
